           Theywerestandingonthebankofthepond,belowOrchardSlope,wherealittleheadlandfringedwithbirchesranoutfromthebank;atitstipwasasmallwoodenplatformbuiltoutintothewaterfortheconvenienceoffishermenandduckhunters.RubyandJanewerespendingthemidsummerafternoonwithDiana,andAnnehadcomeovertoplaywiththem.

           AnneandDianahadspentmostoftheirplaytimethatsummeronandaboutthepond.Idlewildwasathingofthepast,Mr.Bellhavingruthlesslycutdownthelittlecircleoftreesinhisbackpastureinthespring.Annehadsatamongthestumpsandwept,notwithoutaneyetotheromanceofit;butshewasspeedilyconsoled,for,afterall,assheandDianasaid,biggirlsofthirteen,goingonfourteen,weretoooldforsuchchildishamusementsasplayhouses,andthereweremorefascinatingsportstobefoundaboutthepond.Itwassplendidtofishfortroutoverthebridgeandthetwogirlslearnedtorowthemselvesaboutinthelittleflat-bottomeddoryMr.Barrykeptforduckshooting.

           ItwasAnne’sideathattheydramatizeElaine.TheyhadstudiedTennyson’spoeminschooltheprecedingwinter,theSuperintendentofEducationhavingprescribeditintheEnglishcourseforthePrinceEdwardIslandschools.Theyhadanalyzedandparseditandtornittopiecesingeneraluntilitwasawondertherewasanymeaningatallleftinitforthem,butatleastthefairlilymaidandLancelotandGuinevereandKingArthurhadbecomeveryrealpeopletothem,andAnnewasdevouredbysecretregretthatshehadnotbeenborninCamelot.
