           “IthinkperhapsIwillifyouwillcomeoverandtalktomeoccasionally,”saidMissBarry.

           ThateveningMissBarrygaveDianaasilverbanglebraceletandtoldtheseniormembersofthehouseholdthatshehadunpackedhervalise.

           “I’vemadeupmymindtostaysimplyforthesakeofgettingbetteracquaintedwiththatAnne-girl,”shesaidfrankly.“Sheamusesme,andatmytimeoflifeanamusingpersonisararity.”

           Marilla’sonlycommentwhensheheardthestorywas,“Itoldyouso.”ThiswasforMatthew’sbenefit.

           MissBarrystayedhermonthoutandover.Shewasamoreagreeableguestthanusual,forAnnekeptheringoodhumor.Theybecamefirmfriends.

           WhenMissBarrywentawayshesaid:

           “Remember,youAnne-girl,whenyoucometotownyou’retovisitmeandI’llputyouinmyverysparestspare-roombedtosleep.”
