           “Yes,”answeredDiana,stiflingagigglewithanapprehensiveglanceoverhershoulderattheclosedsitting-roomdoor.“Shewasfairlydancingwithrage,Anne.Oh,howshescolded.ShesaidIwastheworst-behavedgirlsheeversawandthatmyparentsoughttobeashamedofthewaytheyhadbroughtmeup.Shesaysshewon’tstayandI’msureIdon’tcare.ButFatherandMotherdo.”

           “Whydidn’tyoutellthemitwasmyfault?”demandedAnne.

           “It’slikelyI’ddosuchathing,isn’tit?”saidDianawithjustscorn.“I’mnotelltale,AnneShirley,andanyhowIwasjustasmuchtoblameasyou.”
