           Afarinthesouthwestwasthegreatshimmering,pearl-likesparkleofaneveningstarinaskythatwaspalegoldenandetherealroseovergleamingwhitespacesanddarkglensofspruce.Thetinklesofsleighbellsamongthesnowyhillscamelikeelfinchimesthroughthefrostyair,buttheirmusicwasnotsweeterthanthesonginAnne’sheartandonherlips.

           “Youseebeforeyouaperfectlyhappyperson,Marilla,”sheannounced.“I’mperfectlyhappy—yes,inspiteofmyredhair.JustatpresentIhaveasoulaboveredhair.Mrs.Barrykissedmeandcriedandsaidshewassosorryandshecouldneverrepayme.Ifeltfearfullyembarrassed,Marilla,butIjustsaidaspolitelyasIcould,‘Ihavenohardfeelingsforyou,Mrs.Barry.IassureyouonceforallthatIdidnotmeantointoxicateDianaandhenceforthIshallcoverthepastwiththemantleofoblivion.’Thatwasaprettydignifiedwayofspeakingwasn’tit,Marilla?”

           “IfeltthatIwasheapingcoalsoffireonMrs.Barry’shead.AndDianaandIhadalovelyafternoon.DianashowedmeanewfancycrochetstitchherauntoveratCarmodytaughther.NotasoulinAvonleaknowsitbutus,andwepledgedasolemnvownevertorevealittoanyoneelse.Dianagavemeabeautifulcardwithawreathofrosesonitandaverseofpoetry:”

           “IfyoulovemeasIloveyou
