           “Haveyougotanythingtocutitwith?”queriedDiana,wipingawaythetearswhichAnne’saffectingaccentshadcausedtoflowafresh,andreturningtopracticalities.

           “Yes.I’vegotmypatchworkscissorsinmyapronpocketfortunately,”saidAnne.ShesolemnlyclippedoneofDiana’scurls.“Faretheewell,mybelovedfriend.Henceforthwemustbeasstrangersthoughlivingsidebyside.Butmyheartwilleverbefaithfultothee.”

           AnnestoodandwatchedDianaoutofsight,mournfullywavingherhandtothelatterwheneversheturnedtolookback.Thenshereturnedtothehouse,notalittleconsoledforthetimebeingbythisromanticparting.

           “Itisallover,”sheinformedMarilla.“Ishallneverhaveanotherfriend.I’mreallyworseoffthaneverbefore,forIhaven’tKatieMauriceandViolettanow.AndevenifIhaditwouldn’tbethesame.Somehow,littledreamgirlsarenotsatisfyingafterarealfriend.DianaandIhadsuchanaffectingfarewelldownbythespring.Itwillbesacredinmymemoryforever.IusedthemostpatheticlanguageIcouldthinkofandsaid‘thou’and‘thee.’‘Thou’and‘thee’seemsomuchmoreromanticthan‘you.
