           Itwasalittlenarrow,twistingpath,windingdownoveralonghillstraightthroughMr.Bell’swoods,wherethelightcamedownsiftedthroughsomanyemeraldscreensthatitwasasflawlessastheheartofadiamond.Itwasfringedinallitslengthwithslimyoungbirches,whitestemmedandlissomboughed;fernsandstarflowersandwildlilies-of-the-valleyandscarlettuftsofpigeonberriesgrewthicklyalongit;andalwaystherewasadelightfulspicinessintheairandmusicofbirdcallsandthemurmurandlaughofwoodwindsinthetreesoverhead.Nowandthenyoumightseearabbitskippingacrosstheroadifyouwerequiet—which,withAnneandDiana,happenedaboutonceinabluemoon.Downinthevalleythepathcameouttothemainroadandthenitwasjustupthesprucehilltotheschool.

           TheAvonleaschoolwasawhitewashedbuilding,lowintheeavesandwideinthewindows,furnishedinsidewithcomfortablesubstantialold-fashioneddesksthatopenedandshut,andwerecarvedallovertheirlidswiththeinitialsandhieroglyphicsofthreegenerationsofschoolchildren.Theschoolhousewassetbackfromtheroadandbehinditwasaduskyfirwoodandabrookwhereallthechildrenputtheirbottlesofmilkinthemorningtokeepcoolandsweetuntildinnerhour.
