           “Well,she’shavingitnow”retortedMarilla.

           TheretortsilencedMatthewifitdidnotconvincehim.Thatdinnerwasaverydismalmeal.TheonlycheerfulthingaboutitwasJerryBuote,thehiredboy,andMarillaresentedhischeerfulnessasapersonalinsult.
