           TheBarrygardenwasabowerywildernessofflowerswhichwouldhavedelightedAnne’sheartatanytimelessfraughtwithdestiny.Itwasencircledbyhugeoldwillowsandtallfirs,beneathwhichflourishedflowersthatlovedtheshade.Prim,right-angledpathsneatlyborderedwithclamshells,intersecteditlikemoistredribbonsandinthebedsbetweenold-fashionedflowersranriot.Therewererosybleeding-heartsandgreatsplendidcrimsonpeonies;white,fragrantnarcissiandthorny,sweetScotchroses;pinkandblueandwhitecolumbinesandlilac-tintedBouncingBets;clumpsofsouthernwoodandribbongrassandmint;purpleAdam-and-Eve,daffodils,andmassesofsweetcloverwhitewithitsdelicate,fragrant,featherysprays;scarletlightningthatshotitsfierylancesoverprimwhitemusk-flowers;agardenitwaswheresunshinelingeredandbeeshummed,andwinds,beguiledintoloitering,purredandrustled.
