           Theplainwasswarmingwithnativeswhohadcome,nodoubt,fromtheneighbouringislets,attractedbytheprospectofpillagingtheJane.Seventyboatswerebeingpaddledtowardstheship.Thesixmenonboardfiredonthem,buttheiraimwasuncertaininthefirstvolley;asecond,inwhichmitrailleandgroovedbulletswereused,producedterribleeffect.Nevertheless,theJanebeingboardedbytheswarmingislanders,herdefendersweremassacred,andshewassetonfire.

           Finallyaterrificexplosiontookplace—thefirehadreachedthepowderstore—killingathousandnativesandmutilatingasmanymore,whiletheothersfled,utteringthecryoftékéli-li!tékéli-li!
