           OnarrivingatKlock-Klock,CaptainWilliamGuyandhiscompanionsfoundapopulation—whichArthurPymestimatedattenthousandsouls,men,women,andchildren—ifnottobefeared,atleasttobekeptatadistance,sonoisyanddemonstrativewerethey.Finally,afteralonghaltatthehutofToo-Wit,thestrangersreturnedtotheshore,wherethe“bêche-de-mer”—thefavouritefoodoftheChinese—wouldprovideenormouscargoes;forthesucculentmolluskismoreabundanttherethaninanyotherpartoftheaustralregions.

           CaptainWilliamGuyimmediatelyendeavouredtocometoanunderstandingwithToo-Witonthismatter,requestinghimtoauthorizetheconstructionofshedsinwhichsomeofthemenoftheJanemightpreparethebêche-de-mer,whiletheschoonershouldholdonhercoursetowardsthePole.
