Evidently,reasonisnotoutragedbyanadmissionoftherealityofthesefacts,althoughthesituationsarestrainedtotheutmostlimitsofpossibility;butthatdoesnotsurpriseus,forthewriteristheAmericanmagician-poet,EdgarPoe.Butfromthismomentonwardsweshallseethatnosemblanceofrealityexistsinthesuccessionofincidents.
ArthurPymandDirkPeterswerewelltreatedonboardtheEnglishschoonerJane.Inafortnight,havingrecoveredfromtheeffectsoftheirsufferings,theyrememberedthemnomore.WithalternationsoffineandbadweathertheJanesightedPrinceEdward’sIslandonthe13thofOctober,thentheCrozetIslands,andafterwardstheKerguelens,whichIhadleftelevendaysago.
Threeweekswereemployedinchasingsea-calves;thesefurnishedtheJanewithagoodlycargo.ItwasduringthistimethatthecaptainoftheJaneburiedthebottleinwhichhisnamesakeoftheHalbraneclaimedtohavefoundalettercontainingWilliamGuy’sannouncementofhisintentiontovisittheaustralseas.
