Whilethetwowereinconsultationuponthemeanstobeemployedforregainingpossessionoftheship,atempestwasraging,andpresentlyagustofirresistibleforcestrucktheGrampusandflungheruponherside,sothatonrightingherselfsheshippedatremendoussea,andtherewasconsiderableconfusiononboard.Thisofferedafavourableopportunityforbeginningthestruggle,althoughthemutineershadmadepeaceamongthemselves.Thelatternumberedninemen,whilethehalf-breed’spartyconsistedonlyofhimself,AugustusBarnardandArthurPym.Theship’smasterpossessedonlytwopistolsandahanger.Itwasthereforenecessarytoactwithprudence.
