TheGrampusthentookasouth-eastcourseunderthecommandofthemate,whointendedtopursuetheoccupationofpiracyinthesouthernseas.
Theseeventshavingtakenplace,AugustusBarnardwouldagainhavejoinedArthurPym,buthehadbeenshutupintheforecastleinirons,andtoldbytheship’scookthathewouldnotbeallowedtocomeoutuntil“thebrigshouldbenolongerabrig.”Nevertheless,afewdaysafterwards,Augustuscontrivedtogetridofhisfetters,tocutthroughthethinpartitionbetweenhimandthehold,and,followedbyTiger,hetriedtoreachhisfriend’shidingplace.
