           “Whocantell?”repliedthecaptaininavoicehoarsefromemotion.“Whocansaybutthatsomeoftheunfortunatecreaturessurvived,andcontrivedtoescapefromthenatives?”

           “Inanycase,”Ireplied,“itwouldbedifficulttoadmitthatthosewhohadsurvivedcouldstillbeliving.”

           “Sir,”repliedthecaptain,“sinceArthurPymandDirkPeterswereabletoadvancebeyondTsalalIslandfartherthantheeighty-thirdparallel,sincetheyfoundmeansoflivinginthemidstofthoseAntarcticlands,whyshouldnottheircompanions,iftheywerenotallkilledbythenatives,iftheyweresofortunateastoreachtheneighbouringislandssightedduringthevoyage—whyshouldnotthoseunfortunatecountrymenofminehavecontrivedtolivethere?Whyshouldtheynotstillbethere,awaitingtheirdeliverance?”
