“Whocantell?”repliedthecaptaininavoicehoarsefromemotion.“Whocansaybutthatsomeoftheunfortunatecreaturessurvived,andcontrivedtoescapefromthenatives?”
“Inanycase,”Ireplied,“itwouldbedifficulttoadmitthatthosewhohadsurvivedcouldstillbeliving.”
