           Atfirstweentertainedthisidea,butonreflectionwerejectedit.

           Attheplacewherethemagneticmeridianscross,theonlyphenomenonproducedistheverticalpositionofthemagneticneedleintwosimilarpointsoftheterrestrialglobe.Thisphenomenon,alreadyprovedbyobservationsmadeonthespot,mustbeidenticalintheAntarcticregions.

           Thus,then,theredidexistamagnetofprodigiousintensityinthezoneofattractionwhichwehadentered.Underoureyesoneofthosesurprisingeffectswhichhadhithertobeenclassedamongfableswasactuallyproduced.
