WilliamGuyandhiscompanionswereverysooninformed.Thecauseofthetumultwastheappearanceofanunknownanimal,aterriblequadruped,whichdashedintothemidstoftheislanders,snappingatandbitingthemindiscriminately,asitsprangattheirthroatswithahoarsegrowling.
Andyettheinfuriatedanimalwasalone,andmighteasilyhavebeenkilledbystonesorarrows.Whythendidacrowdofsavagesmanifestsuchabjectterror?Whydidtheytaketoflight?Whydidtheyappearincapableofdefendingthemselvesagainstthisonebeast?
Theanimalwaswhite,andthesightofithadproducedthephenomenonpreviouslyobserved,thatinexplicableterrorofwhitenesscommontoallthenativesofTsalal.
