           “Whatisit?”askedCaptainLenGuy.

           “Aboat.”

           “IsittheHalbrane’sboatcomingback?”

           “No,captain—itisnot.”

           Thenweperceivedaboat,nottobemistakenforthatofourschoonerinformordimensions,driftingwithoutoarsorpaddle,seeminglyabandonedtothecurrent.

           Wehadbutoneideaincommon—toseizeatanycostuponthisderelictcraft,whichwould,perhaps,proveoursalvation.Buthowwerewetoreachit?howwerewetogetitintothepointofHalbraneLand?

           Whilewewerelookingdistractedlyattheboatandateachother,therecameasuddensplashattheendofthehillock,asthoughabodyhadfallenintothesea.

           ItwasDirkPeters,who,havingflungoffhisclothes,hadsprungfromthetopofarock,andwasswimmingrapidlytowardstheboatbeforewemadehimout.

           Wecheeredhimheartily.Ineverbeheldanythinglikethatswimming.Heboundedthroughthewaveslikeaporpoise,andindeedhepossessedthestrengthandswiftnessofone.Whatmightnotbeexpectedofsuchaman!

           Inafewminutesthehalf-breedhadswumseveralcables’lengthstowardstheboatinanobliquedirection.Wecouldonlyseehisheadlikeablackspeckonthesurfaceoftherollingwaves.Aperiodofsuspense,ofintensewatchingofthebraveswimmersucceeded.
