           Mist,everywhere!Nay,morethanmist,athickyellow,mouldy-smellingfog.Andmorethanthisagain;thetemperaturehadfallensensibly:thiswasprobablyaforewarningoftheaustralwinter.Thesummitofourice-mountainwaslostinvapour,inafogwhichwouldnotresolveitselfintorain,butwouldcontinuetomuffleupthehorizon.

           “Badluck!”saidtheboatswain,“fornowifweweretopassbylandweshouldnotperceiveit.”

           ”Andourdrift?”

           “Moreconsiderablethanyesterday,Mr.Jeorling.Thecaptainhassounded,andhemakesthespeednolessthanbetweenthreeandfourmiles.”

           “Andwhatdoyouconcludefromthis?”

           “Iconcludethatwemustbewithinanarrowersea,sincethecurrentissostrong.Ishouldnotbesurprisedifwehadlandonbothsidesofuswithintenorfifteenmiles.”

           “This,then,wouldbeawidestraitthatcutstheantarcticcontinent?”

           “Yes.Ourcaptainisofthatopinion.
