           “Nobodyknows,Mr.Jeorling,”wasHurliguerly’sreply.“Ifthecurrentgoestothepole,weshallgothere;andifitdoesn’t,weshan’t.Anicebergisn’taship,andasithasneithersailsnorhelm,itgoesasthedrifttakesit.”

           “That’strue,boatswain.AndthereforeIhadtheideathatiftwoorthreeofusweretoembarkintheboat—”

           “Ah!youstillholdtoyournotionoftheboat—”

           “Certainly,for,ifthereislandsomewhere,isitnotpossiblethatthepeopleoftheJane—”

           “Havecomeuponit,Mr.Jeorling—atfourthousandmilesfromTsalalIsland.”

           “Whoknows,boatswain?”

           “Thatmaybe,butallowmetosaythatyourargumentwillbereasonablewhenthelandcomesinsight,ifiteverdoesso.Ourcaptainwillseewhatoughttobedone,andhewillrememberthattimepresses.Wecannotdelayinthesewaters,and,afterall,theonethingofrealimportancetousistogetoutofthepolarcirclebeforethewintermakesitimpassable.
