           Thecaptain,shakinghishead,answerednothing.Westalsowassilent.

           “Eh!ouricebergwillendbyraisingitsanchor,”repliedHurliguerly.“Itdoesnotholdtothebottom,liketheFalklandsortheKerguelens!Sothesafestcourseistowait,astheboatcannotcarrytwenty-three,thenumberofourparty.”

           Idweltuponthefactthatitwasnotnecessaryforalltwenty-threetoembark.Itwouldbesufficient,Isaid,forfiveorsixofustoreconnoitrefurthersouthfortwelveorfifteenmiles.

           “South?”repeatedCaptainLenGuy.

           “Undoubtedly,captain,”Iadded.“Youprobablyknowwhatthegeographersfranklyadmit,thattheantarcticregionsareformedbyacappedcontinent.”

           “Geographersknownothing,andcanknownothingaboutit,”repliedWest,coldly.

           “Itisapity,”saidI,“thataswearesonear,weshouldnotattempttosolvethisquestionofapolarcontinent.”
