Withoutdoubt,ourcaptainwouldhaverecognizedanyblocksofthisdescription,butnoneweretobefoundontheglacier,owingtoitsbeingthatpartofthebergwhichwasoriginallysubmerged,andcametothetopafterthefall.
ThecaptainandWestdecidedfirsttolightenthevessel,byconveyingeverythingonboardtoland.Themastsweretobeclearedofrigging,takenout,andplacedontheplateau.Itwasnecessarytolightenthevesselasmuchaspossible,eventoclearouttheballast,owingtothedifficultanddangerousoperationoflaunching.Itwouldbebettertoputoffourdepartureforsomedaysifthisoperationcouldbeperformedundermorefavourablecircumstances.Theloadingmightbeafterwardsaccomplishedwithoutmuchdifficulty.
Besidesthis,anotherreasonbynomeanslessseriouspresenteditselftous.ItwouldhavebeenanactofunpardonablerashnesstoleavetheprovisionsinthestoreroomoftheHalbrane,hersituationonthesideoftheicebergbeingveryprecarious.Oneshakewouldsufficetodetachtheship,andwithherwouldhavedisappearedthesuppliesonwhichourlivesdepended.
