           Whales,spoutingjetsoffeatherywaterfromtheirblow-holes,appearedatadistance,andIremarkedthatallthemtookasoutherlydirection.Therewasthereforereasontobelievethattheseaextendedfarandwideinthatdirection.

           Theschoonercoveredtwoorthreemilesofhercoursewithoutanyincreaseofspeed.Thiscoastevidentlystretchedfromnorth-westtosouth-east.Nevertheless,thetelescopesrevealednodistinctivefeatures—evenafterthreehours’navigation.

           Thecrew,gatheredtogetherontheforecastle,werelookingonwithoutrevealingtheirimpressions.West,aftergoingalofttothefore-cross-trees,wherehehadremainedtenminutes,hadreportednothingprecise.Stationedattheportside,leaningmyelbowsonthebulwarks,Icloselywatchedtheskyline,brokenonlytowardstheeast.

           Atthismomenttheboatswainrejoinedme,andwithoutprefacesaid:
