TheKerguelenspossesshundredsofotherfjords.Theircoastsarenotchedandragged,especiallyinthepartsbetweenthenorthandthesouth-east,wherelittleisletsabound.Thesoil,ofvolcanicorigin,iscomposedofquartz,mixedwithabluishstone.Insummeritiscoveredwithgreenmosses,greylichens,varioushardyplants,especiallywildsaxifrage.Onlyoneedibleplantgrowsthere,akindofcabbage,notfoundanywhereelse,andverybitterofflavour.Greatflocksofroyalandotherpenguinspeopletheseislets,findinggoodlodgingontheirrockyandmossysurface.Thesestupidbirds,intheiryellowandwhitefeathers,withtheirheadsthrownbackandtheirwingslikethesleevesofamonastichabit,look,atadistance,likemonksinsinglefilewalkinginprocessionalongthebeach.
Theislandsaffordrefugetonumbersofsea-calves,seals,andsea-elephants.
