Thisstatementcontradictedcertainfactsofwhichwewereabsolutelycertain.Afterall,though,itseemedpossiblethatwhenDirkPetersreturnedtoTsalalIsland,thepopulation,seizedbywhocantellwhatterror,hadalreadytakenrefugeuponthesouth-westerngroup,andthatWilliamGuyandhiscompanionswerestillhiddeningorgesofKlock-Klock.Thatwouldexplainwhyhalf-breedhadnotcomeacrossthem,andalsowhysurvivorsoftheJanehadhadnothingtofearduringelevenyearsoftheirsojournintheisland.Ontheotherhand,sincePattersonhadleftthemtheresevenmonthspreviously,ifwedidnotfindthem,thatmusthavebeenbecausetheyhadbeenobligedtoleaveTsalal,theplacebeingrendereduninhabitablebytheearthquake.
“Sothat,”resumedCaptainLenGuy,“onthereturnofDirkPeters,therewasnolongeraninhabitantontheisland?”
“Noone,”repeatedHunt,“noone.Thehalf-breeddidnotmeetasinglenative.”
