Whilethemenwereworking,andthetempestwasragingroundus,aterrificlurchoftheshiptostarboardunderthestrokeofamountainouswave,flungeverythingonthedeckintowildconfusion,andthesearushedinthroughthescupper-holes.Iwasknockeddown,andforsomemomentswasunabletorise.
Sogreathadbeentheinclineoftheschoonerthattheendoftheyardofthemainsailwasplungedthreeorfourfeetintothecrestofawave.WhenitemergedMartinHolt,whohadbeenastrideonit,haddisappeared.Acrywasheard,utteredbythesailing-master,whosearmcouldbeseenwildlywavingamidthewhitenessofthefoam.Thesailorsrushedtothesideandflungoutonearope,anotheracask,athirdaspar—inshort,anyobjectofwhichMartinHoltmightlayhold.AtthemomentwhenIstruggleduptomyfeetIcaughtsightofamassivesubstancewhichclefttheairandvanishedinthewhirlofthewaves.
Wasthisasecondaccident?No!itwasavoluntaryaction,adeedofself-sacrifice.
