Onthefollowingday,whilethemenweregoneinsearchofwater,Iwalkedaboutinthevicinityofthebay.Theplacewasanutterdesert,fortheperiodatwhichsealingispursuedtherehadnotarrived.NewGeorgia,beingexposedtothedirectactionoftheAntarcticpolarcurrent,isfreelyfrequentedbymarinemammals.Isawseveraldrovesofthesecreaturesontherocks,thestrand,andwithintherockgrottoesofthecoast.Whole“smalas”ofpenguins,standingmotionlessininterminablerows,brayedtheirprotestagainsttheinvasionofanintruder—Ialludetomyself.
Innumerablelarksflewoverthesurfaceofthewatersandthesands;theirsongawokemymemoryoflandsmorefavouredbynature.Itisfortunatethatthesebirdsdonotwantbranchestoperchon;fortheredoesnotexistatreeinNewGeorgia.
