           InvadingCarpetbaggersmadeAtlantatheirheadquartersandonthestreetstheyjostledagainstrepresentativesoftheoldestfamiliesintheSouthwhowerelikewisenewcomersinthetown.FamiliesfromthecountrydistrictswhohadbeenburnedoutduringSherman’smarchandwhocouldnolongermakealivingwithouttheslavestotillthecottonhadcometoAtlantatolive.NewsettlerswerecomingineverydayfromTennesseeandtheCarolinaswherethehandofReconstructionlayevenheavierthaninGeorgia.ManyIrishandGermanswhohadbeenbountymenintheUnionArmyhadsettledinAtlantaaftertheirdischarge.ThewivesandfamiliesoftheYankeegarrison,filledwithcuriosityabouttheSouthafterfouryearsofwar,cametoswellthepopulation.Adventurersofeverykindswarmedin,hopingtomaketheirfortunes,andthenegroesfromthecountrycontinuedtocomebythehundreds.

           Thetownwasroaringwideopenlikeafrontiervillage,makingnoefforttocoveritsvicesandsins.Saloonsblossomedovernight,twoandsometimesthreeinablock,andafternightfallthestreetswerefullofdrunkenmen,blackandwhite,reelingfromwalltocurbandbackagain.Thugs,pickpocketsandprostituteslurkedintheunlitalleysandshadowystreets.Gamblinghousesranfullblastandhardlyanightpassedwithoutitsshootingorcuttingaffray.RespectablecitizenswerescandalizedtofindthatAtlantahadalargeandthrivingred-lightdistrict,largerandmorethrivingthanduringthewar.
