           Shewentupthesteps,caressingthebrokenwhitebanisters,andpushedopenthefrontdoor.Thehallwasdarkandascoldasavaultandashiveringsentrywasleaningagainsttheclosedfoldingdoorsofwhathadbeen,inbetterdays,thediningroom.

           Hepulledbackthedoorsandsheenteredtheroom,herheartbeatingrapidly,herfaceflushingwithembarrassmentandexcitement.Therewasaclosestuffysmellintheroom,compoundedofthesmokingfire,tobaccofumes,leather,dampwoolenuniformsandunwashedbodies.Shehadaconfusedimpressionofbarewallswithtornwallpaper,rowsofblueovercoatsandslouchhatshungonnails,aroaringfire,alongtablecoveredwithpapersandagroupofofficersinblueuniformswithbrassbuttons.

           Shegulpedonceandfoundhervoice.Shemustn’tlettheseYankeesknowshewasafraid.Shemustlookandbeherprettiestandmostunconcernedself.

           "Thecaptain?"

           "I’monecaptain,"saidafatmanwhosetunicwasunbuttoned.

           "Iwanttoseeaprisoner,CaptainRhettButler."

           "Butleragain?He’spopular,thatman,"laughedthecaptain,takingachewedcigarfromhismouth."Youarelative,Ma’m?"

           "Yeshishissister."

           Helaughedagain.
