Thewhitewashedbrickplantationhouseseemedanislandsetinawildredsea,aseaofspiraling,curving,crescentbillowspetrifiedsuddenlyatthemomentwhenthepink-tippedwaveswerebreakingintosurf. Forherewerenolong,straightfurrows,suchascouldbeseenintheyellowclayfieldsoftheflatmiddleGeorgiacountryorinthelushblackearthofthecoastalplantations. TherollingfoothillcountryofnorthGeorgiawasplowedinamillioncurvestokeeptherichearthfromwashingdownintotheriverbottoms.
Itwasasavagelyredland,blood-coloredafterrains,brickdustindroughts,thebestcottonlandintheworld. Itwasapleasantlandofwhitehouses,peacefulplowedfieldsandsluggishyellowrivers,butalandofcontrasts,ofbrightestsunglareanddensestshade. Theplantationclearingsandmilesofcottonfieldssmileduptoawarmsun,placid,complacent.
