           Thestranger,anativeofSavannah,hadjustreturnedaftertwelveyearsintheinlandcountry.HehadbeenoneofthewinnersinthelandlotteryconductedbytheStatetodivideupthevastareainmiddleGeorgia,cededbytheIndianstheyearbeforeGeraldcametoAmerica.Hehadgoneupthereandestablishedaplantation;but,nowthehousehadburneddown,hewastiredofthe"accursedplace"andwouldbemosthappytogetitoffhishands.

           Gerald,hismindneverfreeofthethoughtofowningaplantationofhisown,arrangedanintroduction,andhisinterestgrewasthestrangertoldhowthenorthernsectionofthestatewasfillingupwithnewcomersfromtheCarolinasandVirginia.GeraldhadlivedinSavannahlongenoughtoacquireaviewpointoftheCoastthatalloftherestofthestatewasbackwoods,withanIndianlurkingineverythicket.IntransactingbusinessforO’HaraBrothers,hehadvisitedAugusta,ahundredmilesuptheSavannahRiver,andhehadtraveledinlandfarenoughtovisittheoldtownswestwardfromthatcity.HeknewthatsectiontobeaswellsettledastheCoast,butfromthestranger’sdescription,hisplantationwasmorethantwohundredandfiftymilesinlandfromSavannahtothenorthandwest,andnotmanymilessouthoftheChattahoocheeRiver.GeraldknewthatnorthwardbeyondthatstreamthelandwasstillheldbytheCherokees,soitwaswithamazementthatheheardthestrangerjeeratsuggestionsoftroublewiththeIndiansandnarratehowthrivingtownsweregrowingupandplantationsprosperinginthenewcountry.

           Anhourlaterwhentheconversationbegantolag,Gerald,withaguilethatbeliedthewideinnocenceofhisbrightblueeyes,proposedagame.
