           HelikedtheSouth,andhesoonbecame,inhisownopinion,aSoutherner.TherewasmuchabouttheSouthandSouthernersthathewouldnevercomprehend:but,withthewholeheartednessthatwashisnature,headopteditsideasandcustoms,asheunderstoodthem,forhisownpokerandhorseracing,red-hotpoliticsandthecodeduello,States’RightsanddamnationtoallYankees,slaveryandKingCotton,contemptforwhitetrashandexaggeratedcourtesytowomen.Heevenlearnedtochewtobacco.Therewasnoneedforhimtoacquireagoodheadforwhisky,hehadbeenbornwithone.

           ButGeraldremainedGerald.Hishabitsoflivingandhisideaschanged,buthismannershewouldnotchange,evenhadhebeenabletochangethem.
