           GeraldhadcometoAmericafromIrelandwhenhewastwenty-one.Hehadcomehastily,asmanyabetterandworseIrishmanbeforeandsince,withtheclotheshehadonhisback,twoshillingsabovehispassagemoneyandapriceonhisheadthathefeltwaslargerthanhismisdeedwarranted.TherewasnoOrangemanthissideofhellworthahundredpoundstotheBritishgovernmentortothedevilhimself;butifthegovernmentfeltsostronglyaboutthedeathofanEnglishabsenteelandlord’srentagent,itwastimeforGeraldO’Haratobeleavingandleavingsuddenly.True,hehadcalledtherentagent"abastardofanOrangeman,"butthat,accordingtoGerald’swayoflookingatit,didnotgivethemananyrighttoinsulthimbywhistlingtheopeningbarsof"TheBoyneWater."
