           Inthoseearlydaysof1864,nonewspapercouldbeopenedthatdidnotcarryscathingeditorialsdenouncingthespeculatorsasvulturesandbloodsuckingleechesandcallinguponthegovernmenttoputthemdownwithahardhand.Thegovernmentdiditsbest,buttheeffortscametonothing,forthegovernmentwasharriedbymanythings.

           AgainstnoonewasfeelingmorebitterthanagainstRhettButler.Hehadsoldhisboatswhenblockadinggrewtoohazardous,andhewasnowopenlyengagedinfoodspeculation.ThestoriesabouthimthatcamebacktoAtlantafromRichmondandWilmingtonmadethosewhohadreceivedhiminotherdayswrithewithshame.

           Inspiteofallthesetrialsandtribulations,Atlanta’stenthousandpopulationhadgrowntodoublethatnumberduringthewar.EventheblockadehadaddedtoAtlanta’sprestige.Fromtimeimmemorial,thecoastcitieshaddominatedtheSouth,commerciallyandotherwise.Butnowwiththeportsclosedandmanyoftheportcitiescapturedorbesieged,theSouth’ssalvationdependeduponitself.Theinteriorsectionwaswhatcounted,iftheSouthwasgoingtowinthewar,andAtlantawasnowthecenterofthings.Thepeopleofthetownweresufferinghardship,privation,sicknessanddeathasseverelyastherestoftheConfederacy;butAtlanta,thecity,hadgainedratherthanlostasaresultofthewar.Atlanta,theheartoftheConfederacy,wasstillbeatingfullandstrong,therailroadsthatwereitsarteriesthrobbingwiththenever-endingflowofmen,munitionsandsupplies.
