           Andyetandyetsheknewhelovedher. Shecouldnotbemistakenaboutit. Instinctstrongerthanreasonandknowledgebornofexperiencetoldherthathelovedher. Toooftenshehadsurprisedhimwhenhiseyeswereneitherdrowsynorremote,whenhelookedatherwithayearningandasadnesswhichpuzzledher. SheKNEWhelovedher. Whydidhenottellherso? Thatshecouldnotunderstand. Butthereweresomanythingsabouthimthatshedidnotunderstand. 

           Hewascourteousalways,butaloof,remote. Noonecouldevertellwhathewasthinkingabout,Scarlettleastofall. Inaneighborhoodwhereeveryonesaidexactlywhathethoughtassoonashethoughtit,Ashley’squalityofreservewasexasperating. HewasasproficientasanyoftheotheryoungmenintheusualCountydiversions,hunting,gambling,dancingandpolitics,andwasthebestriderofthemall; buthedifferedfromalltherestinthatthesepleasantactivitieswerenottheendandaimoflifetohim. Andhestoodaloneinhisinterestinbooksandmusicandhisfondnessforwritingpoetry. 

           Oh,whywashesohandsomelyblond,socourteouslyaloof,somaddeninglyboringwithhistalkaboutEuropeandbooksandmusicandpoetryandthingsthatinterestedhernotatallandyetsodesirable? Nightafternight,whenScarlettwenttobedaftersittingonthefrontporchinthesemi-darknesswithhim,shetossedrestlesslyforhoursandcomfortedherselfonlywiththethoughtthattheverynexttimehesawherhecertainlywouldpropose. Butthenexttimecameandwent,andtheresultwasnothingnothingexceptthatthefeverpossessingherrosehigherandhotter.
