           Wrappedinlayersoftissuewasabonnet,acreationthatmadehercry:"Oh,thedarlingthing!"asshereachedforit.Starvedforthesight,muchlessthetouch,ofnewclothes,itseemedtheloveliestbonnetshehadeverseen.Itwasofdark-greentaffeta,linedwithwatersilkofapale-jadecolor.Theribbonsthattiedunderthechinwereaswideasherhandandthey,too,werepalegreen.And,curledaboutthebrimofthisconfectionwastheperkiestofgreenostrichplumes.

           "Putiton,"saidRhett,smiling.

           Sheflewacrosstheroomtothemirrorandploppeditonherhead,pushingbackherhairtoshowherearringsandtyingtheribbonunderherchin.

           "HowdoIlook?"shecried,pirouettingforhisbenefitandtossingherheadsothattheplumedanced.Butsheknewshelookedprettyevenbeforeshesawconfirmationinhiseyes.Shelookedattractivelysaucyandthegreenoftheliningmadehereyesdarkemeraldandsparkling.

           "Oh,Rhett,whosebonnetisit?I’llbuyit.I’llgiveyoueverycentI’vegotforit."

           "It’syourbonnet,"hesaid."Whoelsecouldwearthatshadeofgreen?Don’tyouthinkIcarriedthecolorofyoureyeswellinmymind?"

           "Didyoureallyhaveittrimmedjustforme?"

           "Yes,andthere’s‘RuedelaPaix’onthebox,ifthatmeansanythingtoyou."

           Itmeantnothingtoher,smilingatherreflectioninthemirror.Justatthismoment,nothingmatteredtoherexceptthatshelookedutterlycharminginthefirstprettyhatshehadputonherheadintwoyears.
