           Therumorwhichhadbeencreepingaboutundergroundwasnowbeingopenlydiscussed,thatRhettButlernotonlyranhisownfourboatsandsoldthecargoesatunheard-ofpricesbutboughtupthecargoesofotherboatsandheldthemforrisesinprices.Itwassaidthathewasattheheadofacombineworthmorethanamilliondollars,withWilmingtonasitsheadquartersforthepurposeofbuyingblockadegoodsonthedocks.TheyhaddozensofwarehousesinthatcityandinRichmond,sothestoryran,andthewarehouseswerecrammedwithfoodandclothingthatwerebeingheldforhigherprices.Alreadysoldiersandciviliansalikewerefeelingthepinch,andthemutteringagainsthimandhisfellowspeculatorswasbitter.

           "TherearemanybraveandpatrioticmenintheblockadearmoftheConfederacy’snavalservice,"ranthelastofthedoctor’sletter,"unselfishmenwhoareriskingtheirlivesandalltheirwealththattheConfederacymaysurvive.
