           Soonshewasattheendofthedrivewayandoutonthemainroad,butshedidnotstopuntilshehadroundedacurvethatputalargeclumpoftreesbetweenherandthehouse. 

           Flushedandbreathinghard,shesatdownonastumptowaitforherfather. Itwaspasttimeforhimtocomehome,butshewasgladthathewaslate. Thedelaywouldgivehertimetoquietherbreathingandcalmherfacesothathissuspicionswouldnotbearoused. Everymomentsheexpectedtohearthepoundingofhishorse’shoovesandseehimcomechargingupthehillathisusualbreakneckspeed. ButtheminutesslippedbyandGeralddidnotcome. Shelookeddowntheroadforhim,thepaininherheartswellingupagain. 

           "Oh,itcan’tbetrue!"shethought."Whydoesn’thecome?" 

           Hereyesfollowedthewindingroad,blood-rednowafterthemorningrain.InherthoughtshetraceditscourseasitrandownthehilltothesluggishFlintRiver,throughthetangledswampybottomsandupthenexthilltoTwelveOakswhereAshleylived. ThatwasalltheroadmeantnowaroadtoAshleyandthebeautifulwhite-columnedhousethatcrownedthehilllikeaGreekTemple.
