           Shehadlookedmostfetching,wearingamodestlydrapedGreekrobeofwhitecheeseclothgirdledwithredandblueandholdingtheStarsandBarsinonehand,whilewiththeothershestretchedouttothekneelingCaptainCareyAshburn,ofAlabama,thegold-hiltedsaberwhichhadbelongedtoCharlesandhisfather.

           Whenhertableauwasover,shecouldnothelpseekingRhett’seyestoseeifhehadappreciatedtheprettypictureshemade.Withafeelingofexasperationshesawthathewasinanargumentandprobablyhadnotevennoticedher.Scarlettcouldseebythefacesofthegroupsurroundinghimthattheywereinfuriatedbywhathewassaying.

           Shemadeherwaytowardthemand,inoneofthoseoddsilenceswhichsometimesfallonagathering,sheheardWillieGuinan,ofthemilitiaoutfit,sayplainly:"DoIunderstand,sir,thatyoumeantheCauseforwhichourheroeshavediedisnotsacred?"

           "Ifyouwererunoverbyarailroadtrainyourdeathwouldn’tsanctifytherailroadcompany,wouldit?"askedRhettandhisvoicesoundedasifhewerehumblyseekinginformation.

           "Sir,"saidWillie,hisvoiceshaking,"ifwewerenotunderthisroof"

           "Itrembletothinkwhatwouldhappen,"saidRhett."For,ofcourse,yourbraveryistoowellknown."

           Williewentscarletandallconversationceased.Everyonewasembarrassed.Williewasstrongandhealthyandofmilitaryageandyethewasn’tatthefront.Ofcourse,hewastheonlyboyhismotherhadand,afterall,somebodyhadtobeinthemilitiatoprotectthestate.
