Andraisinggoodcotton,ridingwell,shootingstraight,dancinglightly,squiringtheladieswitheleganceandcarryingone’sliquorlikeagentlemanwerethethingsthatmattered.
Intheseaccomplishmentsthetwinsexcelled,andtheywereequallyoutstandingintheirnotoriousinabilitytolearnanythingcontainedbetweenthecoversofbooks. Theirfamilyhadmoremoney,morehorses,moreslavesthananyoneelseintheCounty,buttheboyshadlessgrammarthanmostoftheirpoorCrackerneighbors.
ItwasforthisprecisereasonthatStuartandBrentwereidlingontheporchofTarathisAprilafternoon. TheyhadjustbeenexpelledfromtheUniversityofGeorgia,thefourthuniversitythathadthrownthemoutintwoyears; andtheirolderbrothers,TomandBoyd,hadcomehomewiththem,becausetheyrefusedtoremainataninstitutionwherethetwinswerenotwelcome. StuartandBrentconsideredtheirlatestexpulsionafinejoke,andScarlett,whohadnotwillinglyopenedabooksinceleavingtheFayettevilleFemaleAcademytheyearbefore,thoughtitjustasamusingastheydid.
"Iknowyoutwodon’tcareaboutbeingexpelled,orTomeither,"shesaid. "ButwhataboutBoyd? He’skindofsetongettinganeducation,andyoutwohavepulledhimoutoftheUniversityofVirginiaandAlabamaandSouthCarolinaandnowGeorgia. He’llnevergetfinishedatthisrate."
"Oh,hecanreadlawinJudgeParmalee’sofficeoverinFayetteville,"answeredBrentcarelessly. "Besides,itdon’tmattermuch. We’dhavehadtocomehomebeforethetermwasoutanyway."
"Why?"
"Thewar,goose! Thewar’sgoingtostartanyday,andyoudon’tsupposeanyofuswouldstayincollegewithawargoingon,doyou?"
