Whensheawokethenextmorning,hewasgoneandhaditnotbeenfortherumpledpillowbesideher,shewouldhavethoughtthehappeningsofthenightbeforeawildpreposterousdream.Shewentcrimsonatthememoryand,pullingthebedcoversupaboutherneck,laybathedinsunlight,tryingtosortoutthejumbledimpressionsinhermind.
Twothingsstoodtothefore.ShehadlivedforyearswithRhett,sleptwithhim,eatenwithhim,quarreledwithhimandbornehischild—andyet,shedidnotknowhim.Themanwhohadcarriedherupthedarkstairswasastrangerofwhoseexistenceshehadnotdreamed.Andnow,thoughshetriedtomakeherselfhatehim,triedtobeindignant,shecouldnot.Hehadhumbledher,hurther,usedherbrutallythroughawildmadnightandshehadgloriedinit.
Oh,sheshouldbeashamed,shouldshrinkfromtheverymemoryofthehotswirlingdarkness!Alady,areallady,couldneverholdupherheadaftersuchanight.But,strongerthanshame,wasthememoryofrapture,oftheecstasyofsurrender.
