           Forthefirsttimeinherlifeshehadmetsomeone,somethingstrongerthanshe,someoneshecouldneitherbullynorbreak,someonewhowasbullyingandbreakingher.Somehow,herarmswerearoundhisneckandherlipstremblingbeneathhisandtheyweregoingup,upintothedarknessagain,adarknessthatwassoftandswirlingandallenveloping.

           Whensheawokethenextmorning,hewasgoneandhaditnotbeenfortherumpledpillowbesideher,shewouldhavethoughtthehappeningsofthenightbeforeawildpreposterousdream.Shewentcrimsonatthememoryand,pullingthebedcoversupaboutherneck,laybathedinsunlight,tryingtosortoutthejumbledimpressionsinhermind.

           Twothingsstoodtothefore.ShehadlivedforyearswithRhett,sleptwithhim,eatenwithhim,quarreledwithhimandbornehischildandyet,shedidnotknowhim.Themanwhohadcarriedherupthedarkstairswasastrangerofwhoseexistenceshehadnotdreamed.Andnow,thoughshetriedtomakeherselfhatehim,triedtobeindignant,shecouldnot.Hehadhumbledher,hurther,usedherbrutallythroughawildmadnightandshehadgloriedinit.
