           Somemorningshedismissedthemaidandbroughtherthebreakfasttrayhimselfandfedherasthoughshewereachild,tookthehairbrushfromherhandandbrushedherlongdarkhairuntilitsnappedandcrackled.Yetothermorningsshewastornrudelyoutofdeepslumberwhenhesnatchedallthebedcoversfromherandtickledherbarefeet.Sometimeshelistenedwithdignifiedinteresttodetailsofherbusinesses,noddingapprovalathersagacity,andatothertimeshecalledhersomewhatdubioustradingsscavenging,highwayrobberyandextortion.HetookhertoplaysandannoyedherbywhisperingthatGodprobablydidn’tapproveofsuchamusements,andtochurchesand,sottovoce,retailedfunnyobscenitiesandthenreprovedherforlaughing.Heencouragedhertospeakhermind,tobeflippantanddaring.Shepickedupfromhimthegiftofstingingwordsandsardonicphrasesandlearnedtorelishusingthemforthepowertheygaveheroverotherpeople.Butshedidnotpossesshissenseofhumorwhichtemperedhismalice,norhissmilethatjeeredathimselfevenwhilehewasjeeringothers.
