Justthen,astheyrodealongtheprettygreenlanetowardFuddlecumjig,theyespiedakangaroosittingbytheroadside.Thepooranimalhaditsfacecoveredwithbothitsfrontpawsandwascryingsobitterlythatthetearscourseddownitscheeksintwotinystreamsandtrickledacrosstheroad,wheretheyformedapoolinasmallhollow.
TheSawhorsestoppedshortatthispitifulsight,andDorothycriedout,withreadysympathy:
