ForadayortwoafterDorothyandhercompanionshadstartedontheirtrip,Ozmawasoccupiedwiththeaffairsofherkingdom.ThenshebegantothinkofsomemannerofoccupationforUncleHenryandAuntEmthatwouldbelightandeasyandyetgivetheoldpeoplesomethingtodo.
ShesoondecidedtomakeUncleHenrytheKeeperoftheJewels,forsomeonereallywasneededtocountandlookafterthebinsandbarrelsofemeralds,diamonds,rubiesandotherpreciousstonesthatwereintheRoyalStorehouses.ThatwouldkeepUncleHenrybusyenough,butitwashardertofindsomethingforAuntEmtodo.Thepalacewasfullofservants,sotherewasnodetailofhouseworkthatAuntEmcouldlookafter.
WhileOzmasatinherprettyroomengagedinthoughtshehappenedtoglanceatherMagicPicture.
ThiswasoneofthemostimportanttreasuresinalltheLandofOz.Itwasalargepicture,setinabeautifulgoldframe,andithunginaprominentplaceuponawallofOzma’sprivateroom.
Usuallythispictureseemedmerelyacountryscene,butwheneverOzmalookedatitandwishedtoknowwhatanyofherfriendsoracquaintancesweredoing,themagicofthiswonderfulpicturewasstraightwaydisclosed.
