Guphhadonlytimetocryoutinfearandtakeastepbackwardtoavoidthelizardswhenanothertransformationoccurred,andallreturnedinstantlytotheformstheyhadoriginallyworn.
ThentheFirstandForemost,whohadresumedhishairybodyandbearhead,turnedtotheNomeandasked:
"Doyoustilldemandourassistance?"
"Morethanever,"answeredtheGeneral,firmly.
"Thentellme:whatcanyouofferthePhanfasmsthattheyhavenotalready?"inquiredtheFirstandForemost.
Guphhesitated.Hereallydidnotknowwhattosay.TheNomeKing’svauntedMagicBeltseemedapoorthingcomparedtotheastonishingmagicalpowersofthesepeople.Gold,jewelsandslavestheymightsecureinanyquantitywithoutespecialeffort.Hefeltthathewasdealingwithpowersgreatlybeyondhim.TherewasbutoneargumentthatmightinfluencethePhanfasms,whowerecreaturesofevil.
