GeneralGuphthoughttheWhimsieswouldbeagreathelptotheNomesintheconquestofOz,forunderhisleadershiptheycouldbeinducedtofightaslongsotheycouldstandup.SohetraveledtotheircountryandaskedtoseetheChief,wholivedinahousethathadapictureofhisgrotesquefalseheadpaintedoverthedoorway.
TheChief’sfalseheadhadbluehair,aturned-upnose,andamouththatstretchedhalfacrosstheface.Biggreeneyeshadbeenpainteduponit,butinthecenterofthechinweretwosmallholesmadeinthepasteboard,sothattheChiefcouldseethroughthemwithhisowntinyeyes;forwhenthebigheadwasfasteneduponhisshoulderstheeyesinhisownnaturalheadwereonalevelwiththefalsechin.
SaidGeneralGuphtotheChiefoftheWhimsies:
"WeNomesaregoingtoconquertheLandofOzandcaptureourKing’sMagicBelt,whichtheOzpeoplestolefromhim.Thenwearegoingtoplunderanddestroythewholecountry.AndwewanttheWhimsiestohelpus."
