Duringherseveralvisitsthislittlegirlhadbeenthemeansofdestroyingtwowickedwitcheswhooppressedthepeople,andshehaddiscoveredalivescarecrowwhowasnowoneofthemostpopularpersonagesinallthefairycountry.WiththeScarecrow’shelpshehadrescuedNickChopper,aTinWoodman,whohadrustedinalonelyforest,andthetinmanwasnowtheEmperoroftheCountryoftheWinkiesandmuchbelovedbecauseofhiskindheart.NowonderthepeoplethoughtDorothyhadbroughtthemgoodluck!Yet,strangeasitmayseem,shehadaccomplishedallthesewondersnotbecauseshewasafairyorhadanymagicalpowerswhatever,butbecauseshewasasimple,sweetandtruelittlegirlwhowashonesttoherselfandtoallwhomshemet.Inthisworldinwhichwelivesimplicityandkindnessaretheonlymagicwandsthatworkwonders,andintheLandofOzDorothyfoundthesesamequalitieshadwonforhertheloveandadmirationofthepeople.Indeed,thelittlegirlhadmademanywarmfriendsinthefairycountry,andtheonlyrealgrieftheOziteshadeverexperiencedwaswhenDorothyleftthemandreturnedtoherKansashome.
Nowshereceivedajoyfulwelcome,althoughnooneexceptOzmaknewatfirstthatshehadfinallycometostayforgoodandall.
