AstheyindulgedinthesesadplansforthefuturetheyjourneyedinsightoftheScarecrow’snewmansion,andeventhoughfilledwithcareandworryovertheimpendingfateofOz,Dorothycouldn’thelpafeelingofwonderatthesightshesaw.
TheScarecrow’snewhousewasshapedlikeanimmenseearofcorn.Therowsofkernelsweremadeofsolidgold,andthegreenuponwhichtheearstooduprightwasamassofsparklingemeralds.UpontheverytopofthestructurewasperchedafigurerepresentingtheScarecrowhimself,anduponhisextendedarms,aswellasuponhishead,wereseveralcrowscarvedoutofebonyandhavingrubyeyes.YoumayimaginehowbigthisearofcornwaswhenItellyouthatasinglegoldkernelformedawindow,swingingoutwarduponhinges,whilearowoffourkernelsopenedtomakethefrontentrance.Insidetherewerefivestories,eachstorybeingasingleroom.
Thegardensaroundthemansionconsistedofcornfields,andDorothyacknowledgedthattheplacewasinallrespectsaveryappropriatehomeforhergoodfriendtheScarecrow.
