AstheSawhorsedrewthewagonintothemainstreetthetravelersnoticedthattheplacewasfilledwithpeople,standingingroupsandseemingtobeengagedinearnestconversation.Sooccupiedwiththemselvesweretheinhabitantsthattheyscarcelynoticedthestrangersatall.SotheWizardstoppedaboyandasked:
"IsthisRigmaroleTown?"
"Sir,"repliedtheboy,"ifyouhavetraveledverymuchyouwillhavenoticedthateverytowndiffersfromeveryothertowninonewayoranotherandsobyobservingthemethodsofthepeopleandthewaytheyliveaswellasthestyleoftheirdwellingplacesitoughtnottobeadifficultthingtomakeupyourmindwithoutthetroubleofaskingquestionswhetherthetownbearstheappearanceoftheoneyouintendedtovisitorwhetherperhapshavingtakenadifferentroadfromtheoneyoushouldhavetakenyouhavemadeanerrorinyourwayandarrivedatsomepointwhere--"
"Landsakes!"criedAuntEm,impatiently;"what’sallthisrigmaroleabout?"
"That’sit!"saidtheWizard,laughingmerrily."It’sarigmarolebecausetheboyisaRigmaroleandwe’vecometoRigmaroleTown."
"Dotheyalltalklikethat?"askedDorothy,wonderingly.
"Hemighthavesaid’yes’or’no’andsettledthequestion,"observedUncleHenry.
"Nothere,"saidOmbyAmby."Idon’tbelievetheRigmarolesknowwhat’yes’or’no’means."
Whiletheboyhadbeentalkingseveralotherpeoplehadapproachedthewagonandlistenedintentlytohisspeech.Thentheybegantalkingtooneanotherinlong,deliberatespeeches,wheremanywordswereusedbutlittlewassaid.
