19. How Bunnybury Welcomed the Strangers

           

           Buttherabbitpeoplewere,afterall,themostamazingthingsDorothysaw.Thestreetswerefullofthem,andtheircostumesweresosplendidthattherichdressoftheKeeperoftheWicketwascommonplacewhencomparedwiththeothers.Silksandsatinsofdelicatehuesseemedalwaysusedformaterial,andnearlyeverycostumesparkledwithexquisitegems.

           Buttheladyrabbitsoutshonethegentlemenrabbitsinsplendor,andthecutoftheirgownswasreallywonderful.Theyworebonnets,too,withfeathersandjewelsinthem,andsomewheeledbabycarriagesinwhichthegirlcouldseeweebunnies.Somewerelyingasleepwhileotherslaysuckingtheirpawsandlookingaroundthemwithbigpinkeyes.

           AsDorothywasnobiggerinsizethanthegrown-uprabbitsshehadachancetoobservethemcloselybeforetheynoticedherpresence.Thentheydidnotseematallalarmed,althoughthelittlegirlnaturallybecamethecenterofattractionandregardedherwithgreatcuriosity.

           "Makeway!"criedtheKeeperoftheWicket,inapompousvoice;"makewayforPrincessDorothy,whocomesfromOzmaofOz."

           Hearingthisannouncement,thethrongofrabbitsgaveplacetothemonthewalks,andasDorothypassedalongtheyallbowedtheirheadsrespectfully.

           WalkingthusthroughseveralhandsomestreetstheycametoasquareinthecenteroftheCity.InthissquareweresomeprettytreesandastatueinbronzeofGlindatheGood,whilebeyonditweretheportalsoftheRoyalPalace--anextensiveandimposingbuildingofwhitemarblecoveredwithafiligreeoffrostedgold.
