ThepathtoBunburyseemedlittletraveled,butitwasdistinctenoughandranthroughthetreesinazigzagcourseuntilitfinallyledthemtoanopenspacefilledwiththequeeresthousesDorothyhadeverseen.Theywereallmadeofcrackerslaidoutintinysquares,andwereofmanyprettyandornamentalshapes,havingbalconiesandporcheswithpostsofbread-sticksandroofsshingledwithwafer-crackers.
Therewerewalksofbread-crustsleadingfromhousetohouseandformingstreets,andtheplaceseemedtohavemanyinhabitants.
WhenDorothy,followedbyBillinaandToto,enteredtheplace,theyfoundpeoplewalkingthestreetsorassembledingroupstalkingtogether,orsittingupontheporchesandbalconies.
Andwhatfunnypeopletheywere!
Men,womenandchildrenwereallmadeofbunsandbread.Somewerethinandothersfat;somewerewhite,somelightbrownandsomeverydarkofcomplexion.Afewofthebuns,whichseemedtoformthemoreimportantclassofthepeople,wereneatlyfrosted.Somehadraisinsforeyesandcurrantbuttonsontheirclothes;othershadeyesofclovesandlegsofstickcinnamon,andmanyworehatsandbonnetsfrostedpinkandgreen.
TherewassomethingofacommotioninBunburywhenthestrangerssuddenlyappearedamongthem.Womencaughtuptheirchildrenandhurriedintotheirhouses,shuttingthecrackerdoorscarefullybehindthem.Somemenransohastilythattheytumbledoveroneanother,whileothers,morebrave,assembledinagroupandfacedtheintrudersdefiantly.
